Resumes
AI Resume Builder
How to use AI to draft and edit a resume without sounding generic—proof bank first, human review on every claim, and prompts that keep your voice.
AI resume tools promised a shortcut and delivered a new failure mode: a document that sounds like every other document the model wrote this week. Recruiters are not "detecting AI." They are detecting emptiness. The sentences are smooth. The proof is missing. The stack appeared from the job description, not from a career.
Used correctly, the same models are the fastest editor you have ever had. The difference is what you put in, and what you refuse to let out.
This is the AI chapter of the Ultimate ATS Resume Guide. It assumes you already have format under control. AI will not rescue a two-column PDF.
What AI is good at (and what it will invent)
| Use it for | Do not use it for |
|---|---|
| Compressing a messy proof note into Verb + scope + tool + outcome | Inventing employers, dates, titles, or tools |
| Reordering bullets toward a pasted job description | Filling a blank page from a posting alone |
| Offering three summary options in the Role–Proof–Direction shape | Writing a seniority you do not have |
| Spotting duty language ("responsible for") | Estimating a metric you never measured |
| Checking that a skill in the JD appears somewhere honest | Adding the JD's entire stack to Skills |
The failure is predictable. You paste a posting. You say "write my resume." The model completes the job, not you. That completion is often good enough to get a screen and bad enough to die in it.
A loop that stays honest
- Freeze format. Single column, standard headings, selectable PDF. ATS Resume Format.
- Dump proof. Raw notes, reviews, dashboards, "we finally closed in five days." Do not polish yet.
- Pick a lane and a posting. One target title cluster, one representative JD.
- Draft with constraints. "Use only facts in the proof bank. Flag anything you inferred. Do not add tools."
- Human gate. Delete or rewrite every inferred line. If you cannot source a number, it goes.
- Parse and skim. Paste test + seven-second test from the format guide.
- Track the version. Which draft produced screens. That is the only quality metric that matters.
Prompts that constrain instead of hallucinate
Proof extractor
From my notes below, extract accomplishments as Action + Tool + Outcome + Metric/Scope. If a metric is missing, suggest a truthful proxy I could verify (volume, cadence, team size). Never invent a number. List inferences separately.
Three-zone tailor
Here is my current resume and a job description. Propose edits ONLY to (1) summary, (2) skills order, (3) the top two bullets of my most recent relevant role. Do not add employers or tools. Output a change log of every edit.
Voice lock
Here are two bullets I wrote. Match that level of specificity and vocabulary. Reject corporate clichés I did not use.
Interview defense
For each bullet, ask the follow-up a skeptical hiring manager would ask. Flag any line I should delete if I cannot answer for two minutes.
These are the same jobs the pillar prompts cover. A dedicated builder just keeps the resume, the JD, and the change log in one place so you are not re-pasting.
AI resume session — do not skip the gate
- Proof bank is open and the posting is real
- Prompt forbids new employers, titles, tools, and metrics
- Every suggested line is accepted, edited, or deleted by you
- Skills list still matches bullets
- Paste test on the exported file
- You can talk for ten minutes about every remaining bullet
