When a template helps, when it silently breaks ATS parsing, and how to customize Word, Google Docs, or Pages without turning your resume into a graphic.
Templates sell a feeling: this document looks like a professional. Applicant tracking systems do not buy feelings. They extract strings. If the template puts those strings in a sidebar, a text box, or a flattened image, the professional-looking file arrives as an empty record.
Use templates. Just use the kind that survive extraction, and know when to keep a pretty twin for humans.

The only test that matters
Open the exported PDF. Select all. Paste into Notes or TextEdit.

If you skip this test, you are guessing. Guessing is how people send 80 applications into a void.
What "ATS template" actually means
It does not mean a particular font or a logo that says ATS-optimized. It means:
- One column of text.
- Standard headings a parser already knows: Summary, Experience, Education, Skills, Certifications.
- Body-level contact information (not header/footer).
- Selectable text in the file you upload.
- No icons standing in for words. Write "Python." Do not draw a snake.
Word, Google Docs, and Pages will all do this if you start from a simple file. They will all fail if you pick the gallery template with a colored rail and skill chips.
Templates that usually fail portals
- Canva / Figma / Illustrator resumes exported as flattened PDFs.
- Two-column Marketplace and Etsy files built on nested tables.
- Infographic timelines and icon skill grids.
- "Modern" Docs/Slides templates that put dates in a skinny left rail.
Those files can still be useful: attach them when a founder asks you to email a PDF. Do not upload them to Workday, Greenhouse, Lever, iCIMS, or Taleo unless the paste test passes—which, for this class, it usually does not.
How to customize without breaking parse
Safe to change:
- Typeface among boring, installed fonts (Calibri, Arial, Georgia, Helvetica, Garamond).
- Font size 10–12pt, margins 0.5–1 inch.
- Bold on titles and employers.
- A single accent color on headings if the text itself remains black and selectable.
Unsafe to change:
- Adding a second column "just for skills."
- Putting your name in a text box so it can sit over a banner.
- Icons for phone, mail, LinkedIn.
- Tables for the experience block because alignment is easier.
- Text in header/footer to "save space."
Template intake — 20 minutes
- Start from Word, Google Docs, or Kyrolane—not a two-column marketplace file
- Headings are the standard words, not slogans
- Contact lives in the first lines of the body
- No tables, text boxes, columns, or icon fonts
- Export PDF; confirm every character is selectable
- Paste test in a plain-text editor
- Save as a master; tailor content, not layout, per lane
