Cover Letter Examples
Annotated cover letter examples you can adapt—career changer, same-industry specialist, and early career—using the same four-part structure.
A useful example is a labeled skeleton with someone else's facts removed. What you should copy is which sentence does which job. What you should not copy is "18% activation" unless that number is yours.
All three letters below use the structure in Best Cover Letter Structure. They sit inside the Complete Cover Letter Guide. Role-specific packs: software engineers, nurses, marketing.
How to read the annotations
Each letter is ~260 words. After it, a table maps lines to jobs. When you draft, fill the same jobs with your proof bank—not with adjectives.
Example 1 — Specialist going deeper (customer success)
Dear Mid-Market CS team,
You're hiring someone to keep logos through month six, not to run a 200-ticket queue. That is the work I have been doing.
At Northwind I owned 48 accounts ($2.1M ARR) in Gainsight. I rebuilt the 30-60-90 health cadence with CS ops; logo churn on that segment fell from 11% to 7% in two quarters. I also ran a save desk with AEs that recovered $310k in at-risk renewals without discounting past playbook.
I'm writing because you published the mid-market "human plus self-serve" model last spring—rare in this category, and the same tension I like operating in.
I'd welcome 20 minutes on the Mid-Market CSM role and how you want the first 90 days spent.
Sincerely,
Alex Rivera
| Line | Job |
|---|---|
| "keep logos through month six" | Hook — their problem, their language |
| Gainsight + churn 11% → 7% | Proof 1 — tool + metric |
| Save desk $310k | Proof 2 — mapped to retention |
| Human plus self-serve post | Why them — not "your mission resonates" |
| 20 minutes / first 90 days | Ask |
Example 2 — Pivot (teacher → product marketing)
Dear Product Marketing hiring team,
You need someone who can teach a product, not just announce a launch. That is the job I have actually been doing, just not under this title.
I designed onboarding for a 900-student adult program and rebuilt the email/in-product sequence in HubSpot; completion moved from 61% to 74% in a term. I also wrote the help center your analog would call docs—Support still ships from it.
I'm interested in the PMM role specifically because of your PLG motion for school districts: same "explain complexity without dumbing it down" constraint I already work under.
I'd like to talk about how a curriculum person would spend the first quarter on the Education PMM seat.
Thank you,
Jordan Hale
The previous title is not hidden. The proof is translated. That is the whole pivot letter. More on what belongs in the letter vs the resume: Cover Letter vs Resume.
Example 3 — Early career (internship + one project)
Dear Growth team,
I'm applying for the Junior Lifecycle role because I already ran one full experiment, not because I am "eager to learn"—though I am.
During an 12-week internship I built the first trial-to-paid drip in HubSpot for a 12-person SaaS team. Trial-to-paid moved 11% to 14% over eight weeks (n was small; I can walk through the setup). I also sat in weekly pipeline review, so I know what a messy CRM looks like.
I'm interested in your team because you still publish experiment write-ups; I want to be in a shop that treats lifecycle as science, not blasts.
I can talk Thursday or Friday this week about the Junior Lifecycle opening.
Best,
Sam Okonkwo
Honesty about sample size is a credibility tell. Inventing a bigger n is how interviews die. AI Cover Letter Generator will happily inflate; you should not.
Turn an example into your letter
- Pick the pattern: specialist, pivot, or early career
- Replace every employer, tool, and number with yours
- Map two proofs to this posting's must-haves
- Write a why-them you could not reuse on the next application
- Search for leftover brackets and example names
- Read aloud; cut anything you would not say on a phone screen
