Cover Letter Mistakes

The errors that get letters skipped in twenty seconds: generic openings, resume rehash, fake company praise, leftover AI placeholders, and letters you should never have written.

Cover letters fail in three registers: you wrote one you didn't need, a human skimmed it and shrugged, or a detail proved you were not paying attention. The last one is the only failure you always hear about. The first two look like silence.

Mistake 0: writing it at all

The pillar is blunt. If the portal ignores uploads, if you would only paste a template, if the hour is better spent on Lane A resume fit or a referral—don't write. A generic letter is not "better than nothing." It is a slightly longer nothing.

Skim failures

These die in twenty seconds:

  • "I am writing to apply for the [Role] position at [Company]." Purpose statements are not hooks.
  • Passion stacks. Passionate, excited, thrilled, honored. None of these parse into proof.
  • Resume rehash. The same bullets in the same order, with "I" in front. The letter's job is narrative mapping, not inventory. Cover Letter vs Resume.
  • Duty language. "I would be responsible for managing stakeholders." That is their JD. They already have it.
  • The novel. Career from high school forward. Proof belongs in two points, not a chronology.

Truth failures

These die in the screen you "won":

  • Invented metrics. The letter said 40%; the dashboard said 12%. You will be asked.
  • Seniority inflation. "Led the platform rewrite" when you implemented tickets inside it.
  • Skills you cannot discuss for ten minutes. Same rule as the skills section.
  • Explaining a gap with fiction. One honest line beats a fake consultancy.

Send failures

  • Wrong company, wrong role, leftover [[COMPANY]]. Instant reject. Search the document.
  • "To Whom It May Concern" when the team name is in the posting.
  • Wikipedia why-them. "As an industry leader with a commitment to excellence." That sentence fits 10,000 companies.
  • Header contact only, image PDF. Same extraction issues as resume format if they parse the attachment.
  • Tone mismatch. Meme energy into a hospital system. Funeral energy into a consumer app.

A repair order that actually works

  1. Decide the letter is warranted (pillar checklist).
  2. Cut to 320 words.
  3. Replace sentence one with a hook.
  4. Keep two proofs; delete the rest or move them to the resume.
  5. Write why-them last, from five minutes of real notes.
  6. Search-and-replace company, role, placeholders.
  7. Align claims with the resume you are attaching.

That is tailoring, not a personality transplant.

  • Confirm a letter can change this decision
  • First sentence is not "I am writing to apply"
  • No leftover company names or brackets
  • Two proofs, both defensible
  • Why-them is specific enough to fail on another posting
  • Claims match the resume
  • Word count 220–320 unless instructed otherwise

Common questions

What is the biggest cover letter mistake?
Sending a letter that is only a resume in paragraph form, or sending any letter when the portal will not be read. Both waste the only resource that matters: time you could have spent on resume fit or a referral.
Is 'I am writing to apply' really that bad?
It is not immoral. It is invisible. The first sentence is the whole skim. Spend it on their problem or your sharpest proof.
Will one typo ruin my application?
A typo in body copy is sloppy. The wrong company name is fatal. Recruiters treat it as a proxy for how you would treat a customer. Search-and-replace is not optional.
Can AI cause cover letter mistakes?
Yes: invented metrics, the previous company's name, 'passionate about fast-paced environments,' and seniority you do not have. Treat inferred facts as bugs. See the AI generator guide.
Should I explain a firing or a messy exit in the letter?
Only if the gap or pivot will otherwise look like a lie. One honest clause is enough. Do not write a defense brief. Save detail for the screen.
Is a short letter a mistake?
Under ~150 words you probably skipped proof. Over ~400 you skipped editing. 220–320 is the useful band unless they asked for more.
